What Are the Benefits of a Dermabrasion Facial?

Undergoing a dermabrasion facial can improve the overall appearance of your skin. After the procedure, you may experience a boost in confidence and improved self-esteem. Most people see their faces in the mirror multiple times a day. After dermabrasion treatment, you’ll be happy with what you see in the mirror. The procedure is low-risk and minimally invasive, and most people immediately see results. You won’t need to go through a lengthy recovery time or downtime. Dermabrasion effectively eliminates or significantly reduces acne scars, pitting, and rough skin texture. Dermabrasion treatments also stimulate the body’s natural collagen production, which can further improve the texture of your skin and make it look plumper and more youthful.

Who Should Consider Dermabrasion Treatment?

You should consider a dermabrasion treatment if you have skincare concerns like acne scars, rough skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, dark patches of skin, sun damage, stretch marks, or benign skin growths. Dermabrasion treatments won’t improve burns or burn scars, moles, or birthmarks. We don’t recommend microdermabrasion to patients with rosacea, herpes simplex, keloid conditions, immune system disorders, blood or skin disorders, dark skin, burn scars, or recent brow or facelift procedures. We also don’t recommend the procedure for people taking acne medication or blood thinners.

Before Your Dermabrasion Treatment

We will give you an in-depth consultation before we schedule an appointment for microdermabrasion. We will discuss your skin concerns, overall health and lifestyle, past surgical and non-surgical procedures, medications you’re taking, and your goals and expectations for dermabrasion. If you are a good candidate, we will give you pre-procedure instructions and schedule microdermabrasion treatment. We may also discuss alternatives to dermabrasion, such as chemical peels or skinpen treatments, or recommend other facial treatments or procedures you can get alongside dermabrasion.

How Is Dermabrasion Performed?

On the day of the procedure, you should arrive with a clean face free from makeup, lotions, perfumes, serums, and other skin products. Before the procedure, we will use a topical anesthetic gel or numbing spray to numb your skin. We then use a specialized instrument with an abrasive wheel that spins to remove outer layers of skin from your face gently. You shouldn’t feel any discomfort due to the numbing technique we use before the procedure begins. The procedure may take around an hour or an hour and a half. Afterwards, we will apply a cooling gel to your skin and may use light dressings to protect it. You will need to get a ride home from our office. We will give you clear aftercare instructions and tell you how to clean your skin and change your dressings. We will schedule a follow-up visit to check on your progress.

What to Expect from Dermabrasion Results

After the microdermabrasion procedure, your skin may feel inflamed, tender, and burning for a few days. Most people heal within two weeks and can resume their regular daily activities. You will see the most significant results after around three months. You will need to avoid swimming and vigorous exercise and sports for about a month or month and a half after the procedure. You will also want to avoid smoking or drinking alcohol, and you must stay out of direct sunlight and wear sunscreen daily.
